The Society of Painters was established in 1950 under the presidency of Mahmut Cüda and with the efforts of a group artists consisting of Nihat Akyunak, Saim Özören, Rıza Tangör, Saim Resnelioğlu and Şemsi Arel.
However, the disagreement between the then president Mahmut Cüda, who held the office of presidency for three terms and his friends at the Academy who were instructors, as well as the people encircling him, the reactions raised and pursued against, a decision was adopted to appoint artists of different generations who were loved and respected as represensatives to their respective generations "in order to eliminate people outside the society from precluding their activities" uopn which decision İbrahim Çallı, Ferruh Başağa, Nihat Akyunak, Lütfü Günay and Sabiha Bozcalı were elected as the founding members.
The preconditions of the bylaws drawn up by the initial administrators requiring the members "to have been graduated from the academy, to have participated in three state exhibitions and to have received education abroad" were repealed and a more flexible system was adopted allowing the acceptance of non-academic artists to the Society.
The title of our society which was accepted as The Turkish Society of Painters in 1958 was re-changed after the government change in 1980 leaving the word "Turkish" outside and activities were carried out under the name The Society of Painters.
Enjoying the status of being one of the largest artistic organizations of our country, our Society is fully active with pver 850 members engaged in different branches of visual arts such as painting and stained glass. We are committed to contributing in the broadest way possible to Turkish culture and arts by realizing group shows inland and abroad; balls and monthly dinners; domestic and foreign tours focused on art; seminars and jury services; archival studies to shed a light on the days to come.
Possessing a very large and valuable collection comprising the paintingsof our members, our Society continues its activities at its offices in Şişli acquried at our expenses on 02.01.2001. |
